Milan has an efficient, far-reaching public transport network, run by ATM. Starting from Porta Genova, getting around the city is really simple thanks to the M2 metro and the many surface lines.

The M2 metro

The Porta Genova FS stop is on the M2 (green) line, which crosses the city connecting the main railway stations — Centrale, Garibaldi, Cadorna — and interchange nodes with the other lines. From here you can quickly reach the Duomo (with one change) and most points of interest.

Trams and buses

The area is also served by several tram lines — including historic cars that cross the centre — and by buses. Trams are a scenic and pleasant way to get around, especially towards the old town.

Tickets and fares 2026

ATM urban fares (zones Mi1–Mi3, covering all of the city of Milan):

  • Single urban ticket: €2.20 — valid for 90 minutes, with unlimited changes on metro, tram and bus (one metro journey only)
  • Day ticket: €7.60 — unlimited journeys for 24 hours
  • 3-day ticket: €13 — ideal for tourists

Important update: goodbye to paper tickets

Since 1 January 2026, single-use paper tickets are no longer sold or accepted at the gates. To travel you can use the rechargeable RicaricaMi card, or pay directly at the gates with a contactless credit card or smartphone, or buy tickets on the ATM app. It's the most convenient system for a tourist: just tap your card on the reader.

Good to know

The fares shown are current as of 2026 but may change: check current prices on the app or the official ATM website. Children up to 14 travel free across the whole network.
